How did it take me so long to know that the Mazda 3 hatchback and sedan use the same doors?

This is unusual with hatchbacks, though more common in wagons.

That is ingenious engineering on their part. They only have to stock 4 individual doors instead of 8.

I always thought Mazda got it right the first time.

Probably just 6. I think most sedan/hatches share the front doors at least.

Same thing i’ve noticed in the echo:

I’m guessing it is done to save cost. And it’s not that uncommon, many small sedans share the same rear doors with their hatchbacks, like the Fiesta, Focus, Cruze, Lancer and Mazda2. I think it makes either the sedan or hatchback version look worse than it could be.

Mazda3 wagon? I think that’s called a Mazda5.

In the first three generations, for cost reasons VW insisted that the front and rear doors had to be shared between the Golf and Jetta. This resulted in some really lumpy, ill-proportioned cars, like the Mk III Jetta (although the Golf wasn’t much better):

Thankfully management came to their senses and let the designers use different rear doors from the Golf on the Mk IV, one of the prettiest Jettas made:

But I have to admit that I’m actually partial to the big-butt Mk 2, especially in coupe form - no rear door issues here:

I love this stuff. Some people whinge that trivial things like door handles are shared between some cars. It makes everyone’s live easier and cheaper. My girlfriend’s Mitsubishi Lancer coupe is the same as the Mirage hatch up ‘til the end of the doors. Makes finding parts at the wreckers very

There’s a Volvo wagon that shares doors with the sedan too. You can tell because on both cars the doors follow the sedan’s sloping roofline, though the wagon doesn’t have a sloping roof.

We didn’t get the Echo hatchback here :(

I didn’t know about the new Focus, either. My only Fpcus experience is the Mk1, where the hatchback’s doors are different from the sedan and wagon (which are the same)

Most if not all pre-Ford Volvo wagons share the doors with the sedan. But of course, they don’t look as cheesy as the sloping doors on the 240 ;)

I can understand VW’s policy, as the Jetta is/was primarily geared towards the US (and VW was mostly a niche here until a few years ago). Later generations sold more, so it made more sense to differentiate.

Yeah, I don’t get the hate on using the parts bin as long as it doesn’t compromise the style of that model. I actually appreciate that many of the parts on my truck can be found throughout the rest of the lineup. Makes parts hunting much easier... And cheaper.
